Well, either on purpose or by mistyping plumpass.stripmania.com, you've found your way to Compass magazine. Looks a little bare right now, for sure, but that's why you're here. With your help, we are looking to build this site as a community for people who share a common passion for the written word.

Compass was developed by a group of friends who came together in college over the development of a literary magazine. One by one we all graduated, moved on to the real world and found it harder and harder to write once we lost that sense of community we felt in doing the magazine. So now it's a couple of years later, we're a couple of years older and a couple of us have drifted across the country (and the world). But darn it if the Internet hasn't come in handy for keeping us in close contact and -- although I don't know why this light hasn't come on before -- given us a way to build a new community for writers. We're looking to have our first issue posted by the summer. We hope to see you in it!

What we're Looking For:
Short stories, essays, and novel excerpts should generally be under 5,000 words, but we are somewhat flexible. Please limit each prose submission to one piece per issue, however you can submit in more than one category. The number of poems submitted should be no more than 6 unless they are extremely short. Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please inform us if the piece is accepted elsewhere. Please send only polished, high-quality work. Previously published work is acceptable. Of course, you, the author, retain all rights except first electronic. Because we developed this site out of a love of literature and absolutely no monetary outlay (hence the ads you see on every page) we can't offer you anything beyond you name and work in lights for all to see.

Submission Format:
Compass prefers Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format attachments but will accept any document form of submission that we can recognize, or at least open, including text of e-mail messages. No ZIP or EXE files. Also, please send a quick bio with your submission.

We'll try to respond to every submission, so keep us updated with a current e-mail address! If you don't hear from us for a while, it usually means we're holding it for future consideration. Feel free to contact us with questions.

If your work is accepted:
You will receive an e-mail informing you that your piece has been accepted. By submitting, you grant authority for Compass to publish your piece on our site for the duration of the issue it appears in and then to archive it online. We would also retain the right to use you piece in future "Retrospective" issues. But of course we will be happy to pull it down if you need the piece clear at a later date for publishing purposes. We want your piece to reflect your vision, so we will do as little editing as possible and would always contact the author with any changes we would consider. We will also send an e-mail when the piece is posted on the Web. Please inspect it carefully on the site at that time and let us know if any changes need to be made.

Cordially,
The Staff of Compass
